Aged vs Shared Leads vs Live Transfers for P&C Agents

For auto, home, and renters agencies, aged leads cost the least per record, shared leads cost more, and live transfers cost the most per unit. But price per unit is the wrong number to compare. What matters is what each real conversation costs you, and what each policy costs.

What is the difference between aged leads, shared leads, and live transfers?

What are aged leads?

Aged leads are older lead records, often weeks or months old, sold at a discount after the first buyers have already called them. They cost the least per record. But the person may have bought a policy already, changed numbers, or forgotten they ever asked for a quote.

What are shared leads?

Shared leads are newer internet leads from quote forms, sold to more than one agency. They typically cost $3 to $10 per lead. The person is fresher, but several agencies may call at the same time, so speed matters. You pay whether they answer or not.

What are live transfers?

With live transfers, a calling team finds someone who wants a quote and connects them live to your producer. You pay per transfer that counts. Some vendors advertise live transfers at $90 to $300 per connected call. Our guide to how much live transfer leads cost covers what drives that price.

Why is P&C different from life insurance leads?

Most comparisons of these lead types are written for life insurance agents. Auto, home, and renters work differently, and that changes how much a live conversation is worth.

Auto

A producer can often start an auto quote on the first call once they have driver and vehicle details. A live conversation lets them quote while the shopper still cares.

Home

Home quotes need details about the property. Those are easier to collect with the homeowner on the phone than from a web form.

Renters

A renters policy is small on its own, so a high price per lead is hard to justify. Pairing renters with auto helps.

How do you compare them by cost per conversation?

The formula

Cost per conversation = lead spend ÷ real conversations

Then add the hours your team spent dialing to get there.

A worked example: $400 to spend

Example only. These are made-up round numbers to show the math. They are not market prices, real contact rates, or InsureScales prices.

Aged leads

200 leads at $2

8 conversations

$50 per conversation

Your team dials all 200, often more than once

Shared leads

50 leads at $8

10 conversations

$40 per conversation

Your team dials all 50, fast, before other agencies do

Live transfers

4 transfers at $100

4 conversations

$100 per conversation

None by your team. Someone has to answer.

In this example, live transfers cost the most per conversation in lead spend. That is expected: you are paying for the conversation itself, not a chance at one. What changes the picture is the dialing. Getting 8 conversations out of 200 aged leads can take many hours of producer time. If the time it takes your team to get each conversation costs more than the $50 to $60 difference, the transfer comes out ahead.

Then look at close rates. Someone who just said they want a quote and is on the line now is a different conversation from someone your team caught on the fourth try. Track quotes and policies from each source with your own numbers, then compare cost per policy.

Which one fits your agency?

Aged leads fit when

  • You have a caller with spare time
  • Your budget per record is tight
  • You can live with low contact rates

Shared leads fit when

  • You can call new leads within minutes
  • You follow up several times
  • You are fine competing with other agencies

Live transfers fit when

  • Your producers are busy quoting and servicing
  • You want conversations, not lists
  • Someone can answer during your calling hours

What should you check before you buy?

Aged leads

How old is each lead, and how many times has it been sold? Your team does the dialing, so ask about consent and do-not-call rules before you call.

Shared leads

How many agencies get each lead? Can you return bad phone numbers? How fast does the lead reach you?

Live transfers

When does the clock start? How long must a call last? What happens when nobody answers? What can you send back?

For transfers, our billable live transfer checklist goes through each rule, and pay per transfer vs pay per call vs pay per lead compares the ways to pay.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between aged leads, shared leads, and live transfers?

An aged lead is an older lead record sold at a discount, often after other agencies have already called it. A shared lead is a newer internet lead sold to more than one agency. A live transfer is a phone call: a caller finds someone who wants a quote and connects them live to your producer.

Are aged leads worth it for auto and home insurance?

They can be if you have spare dialing time and a tight budget. They cost less up front, but people on an aged list are often harder to reach, and some will have already bought a policy. Track your cost per conversation, including your team's dialing time, before you buy more.

How do I compare leads by cost per conversation?

Add up what you spent on the leads, then divide by the number of real conversations your team had. Then add the hours your team spent dialing. For live transfers, the transfer is the conversation, so the price per transfer is close to your cost per conversation.

Are live transfers better than shared leads for P&C agencies?

Not for every agency. Shared leads cost less per unit and can work if you call fast and often. Live transfers cost more per unit but put someone who wants a quote on the phone with your producer. The better choice depends on your team's time and your cost per policy.

Do live transfers work for renters insurance?

They can. InsureScales transfers renters with cars, so your producers can quote renters and auto together. Renters on its own is a small policy, so watch your cost per policy closely.
